Two of the Maine Big Three colleges have reported positive cases of COVID-19 in their communities.

Colby College in Waterville and Bates College in Lewiston each confirmed the cases on their websites Thursday evening.

In a statement, Colby officials said an Athletics Department staff member is isolated at home with reportedly mild symptoms. Officials said the individual has reached out to people with whom there was close contact, and those individuals have been asked to self-quarantine.

Bates College President Clayton Spencer did not specify in her statement whether the positive case was in a staff member, calling the person only a “member of our community.” She said that person has been in isolation “for a number of days.” The college is in the process of notifying people who may have been in contact with the person who tested positive.

Bowdoin — the third college in Maine’s Big Three — has not yet reported a positive case, nor has the University of Maine System.
