Periwinkle Needlepoint is hosting open Stitch Sessions every Thursday from 3-6pm. Any variety of slow stitching is encouraged (such as needlepoint, cross stitch, embroidery, etc).
Learn to weave by hand using small, handheld wooden looms and explore the basics of natural dyeing with plants and food waste! This method of weaving allows the process to become more accessible for makers of all experience levels, while the smaller scale affords further opportunities for creating on the go, wherever you may roam. During this workshop, students will learn the basics of simple tapestry weaving on a mini loom using organic, foraged materials and naturally dyed fibers, as well as dye a cotton bandana using seasonal color from local plants. Each student will warp their very own loom and experiment with "bookmark" weaving techniques to create texture, color stories, and patterns on the frame. We will embrace our surroundings and settle into stillness as we tune into the meditative qualities of weaving. Inch by inch, row by row, participants will gain an understanding of the creative capacity of small-scale weaving. Children 10 and over are welcome with an accompanying adult.
Maine Seacoast Mission’s 74-foot flagship vessel Sunbeam will host an open house at the Northeast Harbor Marina on Thursday, September 4 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. During the open house, visitors can see the inner workings of a boat which welcomes more than 1,000 people aboard each year to participate in Mission programming. With the assistance of the Sunbeam, the Mission provides health services, education programming, and community building initiatives to year-round populations on Maine’s remote islands. In addition, a full-time nurse offers flu and Covid vaccination clinics, leads a network of eldercare facilities, conducts healthcare check-ups, and connects residents to mainland specialists. Islands served include Chebeague, Cliff Island, Frenchboro, Great Cranberry, Great Diamond, Isle au Haut, Islesboro, Islesford, Long Island, Matinicus, Monhegan, North Haven, Vinalhaven, Peaks, and Swan’s Island. For inquiries, please contact events@seacoastmission.org or call (207) 801-6008.
One of Yankee Magazine's top five cemetery tours in New England! Walk Portland's Old Burying Ground with a trained guide. Hallowed? Not officially. Historic? Absolutely. Haunted? You decide. Visit the cemetery's unique field of underground tombs, the oldest gravemarker from 1717, the final resting place of the famed Captains of the 1813 battle between the Boxer and the Enterprise, and the interesting carvings of Portland's first stone-cutter, Bartlett Adams. Tours include early gravestone art, important local historic figures, Portland's historic events, and the landscape of this National Historic Landmark, including segregated sections for Black people, Catholics, Quakers, and strangers. Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the ground is uneven once we leave the main pathway. Tours are held unless the weather is stormy.
