Legislative Committee Rejects Concealed Handgun Bill

AUGUSTA, Maine - A Maine legislative panel has rejected a bill that would allow people to carry concealed handguns without a permit.

The Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee voted 7-3 along party lines against Republican Sen. Eric Brakey's bill on Friday. Three Republican lawmakers who were absent may still submit their votes.

Opponents say the measure would put law enforcement and the public at risk.

Gun control groups have been running TV, radio and digital ads throughout the state that say the bill would allow people with no training, "even violent criminals,'' to carry concealed weapons in public.

But supporters say that those who are currently prohibited from carrying concealed handguns, like violent criminals, would still be banned under this proposal.

The bill has the support of the Maine State Police.
