AUGUSTA, Maine - The Maine House of Representatives has rejected an effort to put firearm safety training requirements in a bill that would eliminate the need for concealed handgun permits.
Democratic Rep. Walter Kumiega of Deer Isle sought to amend the bill Thursday to require people to complete a handgun safety course to carry a concealed weapon without a permit. But the House voted 83-63 to defeat the proposal.
The House gave initial approval to the measure erasing the permit requirement for people over the age of 21 last week.
The House on Thursday accepted an amendment that was added by the Republican-controlled Senate that would exempt 18, 19 and 20-year-olds who are military members or veterans from the age restriction.
The measure faces further votes in both chambers.
