Maine’s Representatives Follow Party Lines In House Tax Overhaul Vote

U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin of Maine’s 2nd District voted with fellow Republicans on Thursday in favor of the House tax overhaul proposal, which he says will help Maine families and small businesses.

In a written statement, Poliquin says the House bill keeps intact the current highest tax rate for top earners and simplifies the system so that ordinary Mainers will be able to keep more of their own money.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree of Maine’s 1st District voted against the House measure, saying it will repeal important deductions that offer relief to graduates, teachers and Mainers with high medical expenses.

Maine Democratic Party Chairman Phil Bartlett issued a statement Thursday afternoon saying that the House bill will benefit the wealthy and big corporations at the expense of the middle class, add trillions to the deficit and drive up health care premiums.

The Senate, meanwhile, is working on its own tax plan.
