LePage Vows To Run Against Mills In 2022 If She Doesn't Expand Medicaid 'Sustainably'

Maine Public

Outgoing Maine Gov. Paul LePage says he might run against Democratic Gov.-elect Janet Mills in four years.

LePage, a Republican, told WVOM Radio Tuesday that when Mills takes office, he'll be watching what happens with the effort to expand Medicaid in Maine, an effort he opposes and that Mills has vowed to implement.

"If she doesn't do it sustainably, in four years we will be where we were in 2010," LePage said, "and I'll be back to run against her."

LePage has insisted that lawmakers must come up with a "sustainable" funding mechanism. Lawmakers  agreed on a plan, but LePage vetoed it.

Mills' spokesperson issued a statement that said she plans to implement Medicaid expansion "in a financially sustainable manner."

LePage has said he plans to move to Florida after he leaves office. But he told the WVOM hosts that he's already talking with his wife about buying a summer home in Maine.
