New Partnership Of Maine Officials Will Focus On Combating Elder Abuse

Democratic Gov. Janet Mills has signed an executive order to create an organized effort aimed at fighting elder abuse.

The directive creates a coordinated partnership of state officials from the Departments of Health and Human Services, Public Safety, and Professional and Financial Regulation, as well as members of advocacy organizations.

Among the goals of the Elder Justice Partnership are identifying challenges and developing strategic priorities to prevent and respond to elder abuse.

The National Council on Aging says about 1 in 10 Americans ages 60 and older have experienced some form of elder abuse, with about 33,000 victims of elder abuse living in Maine.

The partnership is charged with submitting recommendations to the governor by December 2021.
