Maine Veteran Dies As Result Of COVID-19

The Togus VA Medical Center is reporting its first death of a patient from complications of COVID-19. The person was identified as someone in their 70s, and no further information is being provided because of privacy reasons.

In a written statement, Tracye Davis, the director of the Maine VA Healthcare System, expressed condolences to the patient's family and friends.

The VA says it has taken steps to ensure "the safest health care environment for veterans and employees." Those measures include clinical screening at VA health care facilities and protective procedures for patients who are admitted. Individuals known to be at risk for COVID-19 infection are also isolated to prevent potential spread of the virus.

Anyone who has symptoms or who has been exposed to someone with symptoms is asked to call the VA before going to the Togus facility.
