The U.S. Postal Service wanted to move services from its Hampden facility to Scarborough as part of a national consolidation plan, a proposal that was widely opposed by the local employee union and Maine's congressional delegation.

Hampden, Frankfort, Newburgh and Winterport have all sent letters to RSU 22 requesting the surplus be returned.

The Municipal Review Committee, which represents the waste interests of 115 towns in central, eastern and northern Maine, said time is running out for a possible relaunch. If the group can't find a private investor or an alternative funding source in the next three to six months, the waste facility may not restart at all.
