Construction has begun for Maine Medical Center's $500 million expansion.

The hospital's Chief Operating Officer Jeff Sanders says the entire project will take about five years.

"What we're starting today is construction that will eventually add 128 private rooms, 19 procedure rooms for surgery and cardiac care at Maine Medical Center, and additional parking for our visitors and employees, which is much needed," Sanders says.

The Portland Planning Board Tuesday gave the green light to Maine Medical Center's plans for a $512 million dollar expansion of its facility in the city's West End.

Maine Medical Center and its partners, the University of Southern Maine and the University of Vermont, will receive a five-year, $20 million research grant from the National Institutes of Health.

The funding will establish a biomedical research network.

The goal is to develop innovative treatments for chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and substance abuse.

Researchers will also identify the best methods to deliver health care in rural environments and will improve access to clinical studies.

WESTBROOK, Maine - The largest office building in downtown Westbrook is being purchased by Maine Medical Center.

A spike in patients caused Maine Medical Center to divert nonemergency ambulances from its Emergency Department this week.

Hospital spokesman Clay Holtzman says there’s no single cause for the increase in demand.

“Because the Medical Center has a significant number of double-occupancy rooms, and we see the sickest level of patients in the state, we have a reduced capacity to respond to sudden increases like we saw earlier this week in patient admissions,” he says.

Maine Medical Center announced Wednesday it’s planning a $512 million renovation and expansion. The project would modernize the facility and add more single-patient rooms, which hospital officials say are becoming the standard for care of patients with increasingly complex health issues.

When Dr. Joel Botler began practicing at Maine Medical Center 37 years ago, the patients who came through the hospital’s doors typically had just a single health problem that needed to be treated.

“Those days are over,” he says.

PORTLAND, Maine - Maine has one the highest concentrations of physicians in the nation, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges.  But recruiting those doctors to set up shop in rural areas is a challenge.

As of 7:00 am Monday, the state's only 24-hour pharmacy opened at Maine Medical Center.

Senior Director of Pharmacy Brian Marden says the goal is to improve patient outcomes and reduce re-admissions, in part by providing a convenient way to get important medications.

"Spending time with people too - we have three consult rooms in our pharmacy that are available for conversations between patients and families and our pharmacists so that they can do the appropriate education and spend time answering questions that people may have," Marden says.

PORTLAND, Maine - Officials at Maine Medical Center in Portland say they welcome the new federal CDC guidelines for Ebola, and say the hospital already exceeds many of the standards. Maine Med had a chance to test its preparedness earlier this month when a patient with possible Ebola symptoms came to its emergency room. On Wednesday morning, hospital staff gave reporters a glimpse of the protective suits and protocols they've put in place.
