Community Calendar

Which Stitch? is a community group where participants bring their current fiber and needle projects to work and converse with each other. Participants are welcome to use ArtWaves' supply of materials to knit, crochet, sew, mend, embroider, weave, felt, cross stitch, and so much more! Beginning instruction can be provided and the occasional special guest will introduce new techniques and demo their work.

This ongoing group maintains an email list for people interested in receiving regular updates and information. If you would like to be included, please email office@artwavesmdi.org.

Which Stitch? is a drop-in group, no registration is required. It is free for ArtWaves Members and a $5 suggested donation for non-members

Portland--Come Light The World!
Have you ever bought a goat from a vending machine? How about warm clothing for a child, groceries for a family, or job training for the underemployed?

This year Portland will have that chance. From November 20 to December 10 visitors at The Maine Mall can purchase essential items like from The Light the World Giving Machine to help those in need in Maine and throughout the world.

The nonprofits featured in the South Portland Giving Machines include: Catholic Charities; Furniture Friends; Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine; Ronald McDonald House Charities Maine and Through These Doors.

Please read on before booking:

Tour-goers must be 21 or older. Infant-wearing is welcome - the tour path through our manufacturing plant is not suitable for young children or strollers.

Guests who are not drinking beer can purchase a Designated Driver ticket and will have a choice of NA beverage.

Dogs are not allowed on this manufacturing plant tour.

Pain researcher and UNE faculty member Ian Meng will lead a discussion on our own brains' opioids and their possible placebo effects.

Explore new insights into how artificial intelligence is shaping Maine’s labor market. This interactive session brings together business leaders, educators, policymakers, and students for a focused discussion on AI, skills, and the future of work. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.

Join us in practicing gratitude this holiday season! Show kindness and gratitude in big and small ways in the community to be entered into a drawing for a Falmouth Memorial Library bookbag! Here's how it works: Pick up a Gratitude Challenge booklet at the library. Fill out your name and phone number, and use the inspiration ideas in the middle to show gratitude around your community. Return the booklet to the Falmouth Memorial Library by December 30. We will draw a winner on January 2 and contact them to pick up a free library bookbag!

Color as Expression: Beyond Realism

Begins Tuesday, November 4, 2025 | 10 AM – 1 PM | $280
Designed for artists looking to loosen up and explore the passionate potential of color, this course channels Matisse’s love of vivid, sometimes unexpected color combinations. Students will practice using brushwork and color relationships to express mood and personality in everyday subjects, moving beyond realism to discover a more personal, expressive style.

This course is designed for painters at all levels, from beginners looking to build confidence to more experienced artists eager to deepen their practice. All classes take place at Nadra Clark Gallery, 256 US-1, Scarborough, Maine.

The Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine and the Southern Maine Agency on Aging will collaborate to offer an information session for those interested in becoming a Respite Care Companion. We're looking for volunteers who will be trained and matched with older adults who have difficulty living independently. As a volunteer, you will offer companionship and light, non-medical assistance to your new friend through weekly visits - as well as provide an opportunity for their caregiver to enjoy some respite time!
