On Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 6 p.m., the Rockport Public Library will host a presentation entitled “Protecting Maine’s Natural Places: The Legacy and Future of the Land and Water Conservation Fund.” The free talk is part of the library’s ongoing series in partnership with the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Maine Chapter.
The program, presented by Emily Clark, will be a conversation about the history and impact of the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) in Maine and across the nation. Clark will explore recent policy shifts, discuss the attempted sale of public lands, celebrate conservation victories, and look ahead to the future of protecting the natural places Mainers love.
Emily Clark is the Chair of the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Maine Chapter and serves as Midcoast Programs Chair. A long-time hiker, kayaker, and outdoor enthusiast, Clark lives in Midcoast Maine where she is deeply committed to supporting her community and protecting the landscapes that define it.
Founded in 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club is America’s oldest conservation and recreation organization. With more than 100,000 members, advocates, and supporters in the Northeast and beyond, the nonprofit AMC promotes the protection, enjoyment, and stewardship of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of the Appalachian region.

Building upon foundational metalsmithing techniques, this class will elevate your existing skills and inspire you to tackle more advanced jewelry projects. We will cover bezel setting for faceted gemstones, saw piercing, soldering techniques, and finishing. Students will move through assigned projects, including a pair of sterling silver “diamond” earrings (or two pendants), but there will be plenty of room for design creativity. Be prepared to learn tips and tricks that will advance your jewelry making to the next level!
Please note: It is important that students have basic metalsmithing knowledge, either through the beginner 6-week metalsmithing course at Artascope or a comparable class.
Non-members: $250 for 6 weeks. Members: $200.
Open to adults only.
Series fee does not include materials. Supply kit is available from the instructor for $35 when series begins. Additional supplies are available to purchase separately as needed for class projects.
About the instructor: Carly has been working in the professional jewelry business for 13 years, and started her company, Flux Jewelry Studio in 2018. After learning the basics of fabrication and repair as a bench jeweler, she spent an inspiring year in Florence, Italy, taking classes in gemology, wax carving, rendering, and stone setting. Many of the unique engraved finishes and detail techniques Carly uses in her designs were passed down from the expert hands of jewelers working in the traditional Italian metalsmithing style. In her sunny Westbrook, Maine studio, Carly spends hours twisting fine wires, forming small beads of metal, and engraving each piece. Old world techniques, antique design inspiration, and a fresh take on classic concepts are Flux specialities.
Join Kelly Corbin, owner of Living Landscapes Maine, to learn best practices for fall maintenance in our gardens. Kelly will cover a variety of topics around habitat gardening and leave plenty of time for Q & A. You’ll learn why habitat gardens matter to us and to wildlife, the importance of “leaving the leaves” in the fall, best gardening practices to support birds and pollinating insects over fall and winter, and ways to transition existing lawn to habitat gardens that can be planted in spring.
Nathan McClain, author of two poetry collections, a recipient of fellowships from The Frost Place, and Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, and a graduate of the Warren Wilson Program for Writers, will read at Blue Raven’s 4th poetry series event on September 24th at 7pm.
His most recent book, Previously Owned, has been called a “masterful collection, in which a speaker of nuanced intelligence and lush interiority reflects upon the American landscape, its pastoral and judicial and historical duplicity.”
He will be joined by California poet, Marsha de la O, author of four collections, winner of the Isabella Gardener Award for Poetry, and whose poems have appeared in The New Yorker, The Slowdown, as well as Best American Poetry Blog.

The clock struck 11 PM at Elvis Presley’s Los Angeles mansion. Under the glow of red and blue lights, The Beatles stepped into a room that seemed to echo the future of music—a jukebox, a crescent couch, and a bar set the stage. Elvis stood at the center, ready for the convergence of two worlds. That night, rock ‘n’ roll royalty sealed its legacy.
