In honor of Black History Month, the Rockport Public Library will feature a month-long exhibit entitled, A Scott Joplin Celebration! From Feb. 3 through 28, the public is invited to view original artwork, sketches, sketchbooks, book prototypes, sheet music, and more from acclaimed author/illustrator Stephen Costanza’s book King of Ragtime: The Story of Scott Joplin.
The material featured in the exhibit will explore the life of beloved African American composer Scott Joplin, whose joyful and irrepressible ragtime music paved the way for jazz.
On Saturday, Feb. 28, at 10:30 a.m., a Multimedia Family Show will complement the exhibit. Costanza will provide a dynamic, music-filled presentation that offers a behind-the-scenes look at the process for creating his book about Scott Joplin. Books will be available for purchase at the event.
Stephen Costanza has written and illustrated numerous picture books, including Mozart Finds A Melody and the recent When Auggie Learned to Play Chess. His book King of Ragtime: The Story of Scott Joplin received starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews, Booklist, and Publisher’s Weekly, and was the recipient of the 2022 Golden Kite Award for illustration by the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. He lives in North Haven, Maine.

Laissez Le Bontemps Roulez" is what the folks in N'Owlins say on Fat Tuesday, the last day before the solemn season of Lent. the city is a crossroads of world culture, simultaneously parochial and cosmopolitan. anywhere you go in the city you might come across a brass band leading a parade. this includes weddings, parties and even funeral processions. Sad hymns on the way to the cemetery and joyful tunes on the way back. Community members join the parade even if they did not know the deceased, forming a "second line" dancing to the beat. For one evening only, the Marshall Wharf Brewing Company in Belfast will be transformed to a speakeasy on Bourbon Street when the Huddled Masses Orchestra plays on Tuesday February 17th from 5 to 8 PM. "the program includes songs you can dance to and also sing along with," said Joe Niemczura, the leader. "Lately we have been playing Latin-American Cumbia music. the evening would not be complete without it."Marshall Wharf Brewing Company is located on the waterfront by the bay at the foot of Belfast downtown.
