AUGUSTA, Maine - Gov. Paul LePage appears poised to break all existing records for issuing the largest number of vetoed bills during a legislative session. But the Maine Legislature may set a few records of its own.
"Secretary will close the vote and the run the total, the chair will announce the vote," said Sen. Garrett Mason. "Thirty-five senators having voted in the affirmative and zero in the negative, the veto is overridden."
In announcing the results of the Senate's decision Thursday on a vetoed bill that changes the way some write-in votes are counted, Sen. Garrett Mason added yet another overridden veto to the growing number of overrides racked up in the Republican-controlled Maine Senate so far this session.
LePage has promised to veto hundreds more bills sponsored by Democrats in retaliation for their refusal to back his bill for a statewide vote on the future of the state income tax.
Meanwhile, the Maine House voted 146-1 to override LePage's veto of a bill that would shield information about materials carried by trains from public view.
