Lawmakers Ask Attorney General to Weigh in on Veto Debate

AUGUSTA, Maine - Maine lawmakers want the state's attorney general to weigh in on whether Republican Gov. Paul LePage can still veto several bills that remain on his desk.

LePage says he can still veto dozens of bills on his desk because lawmakers adjourned last month. Lawmakers say they simply recessed with the intention of returning. They say that means 20 bills on his desk are law because LePage held them for more than 10 days.

House Speaker Mark Eves asked Mills in a letter Thursday to provide an opinion on the issue. Senate Democratic Leader Dawn Hill and Republican Sen. Tom Saviello also asked Mills to weigh in.

Mills' spokesman declined to comment.

Lawmakers say another 51 bills will become law this weekend if LePage doesn't act by Saturday.
