LePage Seeks Limits on Opioid Prescriptions

AUGUSTA, Maine - As part of his strategy to respond to the state's drug crisis, Gov. Paul LePage has introduced legislation that he says is designed to put limits and safeguards on the prescription of highly addictive opioids.

LePage told an audience in Waldoboro last night that the measure would place new directives on prescribers "to require physicians who prescribe drugs not only register with the Prescription Monitoring Program but to use it.  And if they don't use it they lose their ability to prescribe - period."

The measure would also place new limits on opioid prescriptions, require training for prescribers, and mandate that opioid prescriptions be submitted electronically to pharmacists beginning in 2018.
