Former Vice President Joe Biden extended his wave of success on Super Tuesday to Maine, with about 92.27 percent of precincts reporting. He beat Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders by a narrow margin.
Sanders handily won the Maine caucuses in 2016 and has a strong campaign operation in the state this campaign season, while Biden had virtually no organizing presence.
Late Tuesday night Sanders's Maine campaign director Benjamin Collings still positioned his candidate as the populist underdog. "You know, we went from a point where a few months ago we were thought to not be very viable, but now we've climbed up to be pretty much at the front of the pack in Maine."
Biden held 34.3 percent of the vote when the Assoicated Press called the race, and Sanders 33 percent. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren held 15.8 percent, with other candidates trailing.
Candidates must reach 15 percent of the vote or take one of its congressional districts to win delegates to the Democratic National Convention.
