Bates College

The cost of attendance at Bates College will increase by 4.9% for the 2024-25 academic year. That's slightly more than the nationwide average increase for four year private colleges.

In a message on Thursday evening, Bates President Clayton Spencer said that 254 staff members voted against the union, while 186 supported it.

The votes from faculty and staff were cast more than a year ago, but the results have yet to be unveiled as the board reviews a request from the college.

Jenkins will be the ninth person to serve as president of Bates since its founding in 1855, and will be the first Black president in the college's history.

A release from the school notes that the college's endowment has more than doubled since Spencer took over, and the school has added more financial aid and diversified its student population.

On Monday, the Bates Educators and Staff Organization, or BESO, filed an unfair labor practice charge against the school with the National Labor Relations Board.
