Democrats: No Investigation into Governor's Actions Until Session Adjourns

AUGUSTA, Maine — Democratic leaders in the Maine House said Friday there will be no effort to look into the recent series of missteps by Gov. Paul LePage until after the session adjourns for the year on July 16.
House Majority Leader Jeff McCabe says lawmakers need to approve the state budget and act on other bills. After that, he says, LePage's efforts to get Democratic House Speaker Mark Eves fired from the Good Will-Hinckley school, his joking threats to shoot a newspaper cartoonist and his calls for the execution of Lewiston's legislative delegation in the city square could be investigated.

"There's nothing funny about threatening people and suggesting that people are shot, and I think that's a real concern," McCabe said. "I also think that, coupled with the governor's recent behavior and his recent amount of anger towards the Legislature, as well as citizens of Maine, should be of concern to all of us."

McCabe says all possibilities for a LePage investigation will be on the table after adjournment, including referring the request to the Legislature's Government Oversight Committee.
