Eves Asks Maine AG to Enforce Open Meetings Law

AUGUSTA, Maine - Maine House Speaker Mark Eves has written to Attorney General Janet Mills asking that she take action to enforce the state's open meetings law.

Eves says it is clear that Gov. Paul LePage blocked the Blue Ribbon Commission to Reform Public Education Funding from meeting publicly at the Blaine House, in violation of the law.

"We're asking the attorney general to enforce the laws that are on the books currently," Eves says, "so that the public does have access to the meetings."

Eves says the commission was the governor's idea and was created by the Legislature to take a broad look at education in Maine, from kindergarten through college, and make recommendations to improve education.

"And now that he is backing out of it, I think it puts into question whether this commission will move forward or not. But, it is in statute and is required to conduct business."

Eves says the public has a right to attend the meetings and he is urging the attorney general do whatever is necessary to enforce the law.
