Maine Revenue Panel Sticks With Forecast, Despite Pending Ballot Question Recounts

AUGUSTA, Maine - The state Revenue Forecasting Commission is making only minor adjustments to its forecast as it awaits recounts of two ballot questions apparently approved by voters earlier this month.

Mike Allen, of Maine Revenue Services, chairs the panel.  “The forecast is always based on current law," he says, "As of today, the current law does not include the 3 percent surtax or the legalization of marijuana.”

Allen says the group is recommending a slight increase in the current budget year of $33 million to reflect revenues coming in higher than expected.

He says the group is also projecting a slight decrease in revenue in the two-year budget that starts July 1, but says that will likely be more than offset, if the recounts show passage of the tax and marijuana referendum questions.
