Legislation that would give all veterans with any service-related disability free lifetime entry to the U.S. National Parks system has moved through the Congressional Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.

The bill was authored by Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins and New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, a Democrat.

Under a previous law, veterans had to qualify as having a 100 percent permanent disability in order to get a free pass to national parks and federal lands. The Wounded Veterans Recreation Act would allow any veteran with a service-related disability to get the pass.

The bill now will now be considered by the full Senate.
