PORTLAND, Maine - At least $24.3 million was spent in Maine's 2nd Congressional District race this year.The Sun-Journal reports Federal Election Commission finance filings show outside groups like the Republican-backed Congressional Leadership Fund and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee poured in $13.5 million.
Democratic newcomer Jared Golden spent $5.6 million in a victory over Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin, who spent $4.1 million. A recount is underway.
Golden says his team was surprised by the amount of money they raised. Golden received 23 percent of his contributions from people who gave $200 or less. Most of the remaining funds were from donors who gave up to $2,700. Seven percent was from political action committees.
Poliquin received 54 percent of his contributions from PACs and 2 percent from individuals contributing $200 or less.
