Gov. Mills Holds Nearly 40 Bills, Including One Allowing Sports Betting

Gov. Janet Mills has held 39 bills for further consideration - ranging from sales tax exemptions to a measure allowing sports betting in Maine. The governor says every bill was reviewed for both policy and technical reasons. "Some of them had technical problems, some of them needed to become consistent with other laws already on the books. Things like that," Mills says. "So, I was vetting for a number of reasons.”

When the Legislature returns for at least three days, Mills will have to sign or veto the bills, or have the Legislature recall them from her desk to make changes in response to her objections. She expects that won't happen until the second regular session convenes in January.
