The Maine House of Representatives has upheld Gov. Janet Mills veto of legislation that would have allowed sports betting in Maine. Republican Rep. Seth Bradstreet urged his colleagues to sustain the veto. "It’s my hope that by sustaining the governor's veto we will be able to help some people from feeding their current addictions, and perhaps more importantly prevent other people from entering the situation where they will develop a gambling addiction."
Last week the state Senate voted to override the veto with supporters arguing that Maine is losing out on revenue as states like New Hampshire and Rhode Island allow it.
"It’s estimated that legalized sports wagering could bring the state as much as $6.9 million in annual revenue," said Democratic Rep. John Schneck, of Bangor. "Regulating sports betting is the right thing to do."
