Mon 11/17 SIGN LANGUAGE
We learn about the history of sign language, how American Sign Language came to be, and how it continues to evolve. How does the language work, why is it different for those who are deaf and those who are hearing, and what are the misconceptions about signing? This show is part of our series "Ready & Able: Living with a Disability in Maine," and will be streamed live on Maine Public's YouTube channel and Maine Calling's Facebook page—with an ASL interpreter, in addition to those on the panel.
Tue 11/18 WIND: HOW IT AFFECTS OUR LIVES
Best-selling author Simon Winchester joins us to discuss his new book about wind: The Breath of the Gods. He examines what occurs in our atmosphere, including hurricanes, tornadoes and fires—as well as the role of wind as a source of energy. He also explores how wind plays a part in our everyday lives, from airplane and car travel to natural disasters.
Wed 11/19 BABY NAMES
Do you know what the most popular baby names are in Maine? They differ somewhat from the rest of the country. We’ll learn about trends in baby naming, which names have Maine connections (think of a certain basketball phenom), why old-fashioned names cycle back—and what goes into the process of choosing a name. This show is part of our series “Name Calling on Maine Calling: Stories of Maine Names.”
Thu 11/20 HOW TO GET A BOOK PUBLISHED
Think it’s hard to write a book? Try getting in published! Publishers say the odds of getting a first book published are about 1-2%. We’ll explore different paths to getting published, for fiction, non-fiction, children’s books and other manuscripts.
Fri 11/21 MOVING TO MAINE (REBROADCAST)
More people have been moving to Maine from other states in recent years. Some came during the pandemic to work remotely, others sought out Maine's abundant outdoor recreation and slower pace. We listen back to our earlier show about demographic patterns of those arriving, why they made the move, and how they feel about their new home state. (Originally broadcast 10/27/25)
