Portland K-12 students will not be allowed to have or use their phones during the day after the school board Tuesday unanimously passed a controversial bell-to-bell cellphone ban to begin in the fall.

The Portland Public School board has voted unanimously to add Yom Kippur and Eid al-Fitr to the district's holiday calendar next year.

Portland Public Schools say they're prioritizing equity, as students of color make up more than 53% of the district's student body.

More than 7,200 multilingual learners were enrolled in Maine public schools during the 2023-2024 school year.
